[edit] County name etymology formatting

Hi, I've noticed that you altered the list formatting I did to most of the U.S. county name etymology articles (Colorado and Texas, to name a couple). When the bullet-point wikicode is formatted like this:

* List item 1
* List item 2
* List item 3

the result is a single unordered list. However, when there are spaces between the bullets in the wikicode, like this:

* List item 1

* List item 2

* List item 3

the result is a separate unordered list for every single bullet; "List item 1" exists in a list of one item, "List item 2" exists in a second list of one item, and so on. Presumably, the effect you are after in doing this is to increase the amount of spacing between list items, but that is a matter best left to the CSS defining the sitewide presentation (and, if you so desire, your own personal stylesheet which can be customized by editing User:Dralwik/monobook.css - see m:Skins for further information). I will most likely switch the formatting on these back, unless there is a specific reason you prefer these articles to be formatted as multiple lists, rather than a single list. I came across your article on the Texas county etymologies a few weeks ago when I created the article on John H. Reagan and the past fortnight have been working on a companion to yours, List of Ohio county name etymologies. Any thoughts on it? I see you were born in Ottumwa, Iowa. I knew two things about Ottumwa. One, that Radar O'Reilly from M*A*S*H was from Ottumwa, and two, Richard Nixon was stationed there for a time in World War II. Nixon was in the Navy, so it makes perfect sense for him to be in Iowa, n'est pas? Now I know a third thing about Ottumwa, Iowa. Keep up the good work re Texas. May I suggest that on List of Texas county name etymologies and List of Texas county seat name etymologies (and any others) you remove the state name in the county/seat article link, and the repetition of the county/seat name at the beginning of each etymology?

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

[edit] Three suggestions

1. add comments to your revisions, so it's easier for others to know what you are doing 2. rather than making lots of small consecutive edits, use the preview button before saving one final edit. 3. when adding factual information to an article, add the source of the information to the reference list. Everyone's guilty of not doing this, not least me, but it's very helpful to be able to see where stuff is coming from, rather than going off on a hunt to validate it from other sources.

I'm leaving these comments because I've noticed you're making frequent alterations to Amazon, without comments as to what you're doing, and changing the factual information without saying where your facts are coming from.

Hi Kelly, I noticed you reverted some IP edits on my userpage a few days ago. I just wanted to let you know, the friend's computer I was using wouldn't let me log on. In general I'm suspicious of IP edits of user pages. I don't revert all such edits, only those that look suspicious, and I guess those edits looked sufficiently suspicious to me, although in retrospect I can't imagine why. [edit] Wikipedia:Templates for Deletion

It's a shame that TfD is dominated by a handful of people with a grudge against large, useful navigational templates, and want to see them all replaced by smaller, incomplete, less useful ones. And for some of the more fanatical members, even that's not enough; they want to remove all navigational templates and force everyone to only use Categories to find related articles! Maybe lovers of big templates should mobilise ourselves and make a permanent presence on TfD to argue against deleting them? Otherwise, this is just the thin end of the wedge! -Hi, I agree that the Skyline pic #3 should be on there, but I noticed that you put your vote in for #1. Hi. TerraServer-USA contains a link to a subpage in your userspace. Userspace links from the main space aren't a good idea, as they break mirrors (who often, and quite rightly, only show the main article namespace). Can you figure out what a sensible solution for this problem is - perhaps to remove the link or move the linked material into the main article space? I see you're using a template in your signature. A much better method for a custom signature I'd suggest (which I use for my signature) is the raw signature method. I too have been working on the Calumet articles, and I was wondering if the Calumet Region page should redirect to Northwest Indiana (a practically synonymous region) as opposed to the river page, which wouldn't be intended to describe what the region is (historic manufacturing zone, etc.). If it comes down to specifics, many MANY conventions will call themselves "Chicago" then actually book in someplace like Rosemont, Naperville, Lombard, etc. over hotel fees, room reservations, being able to get blocks of rooms, and generally lower taxes in the suburbs than the city proper. Many such suburbs are easily accessed of course by car and by Metra. I know of a few annual SF cons that do this for precisely these reasons. Lombard is supposed to get a convention center out by Yorktown Mall VERY soon. Naperville has considered it, but the plan was shelved. Rosemont, of course, has the Stephens Convention Center. Another angle to look at is see if any of the area colleges and universities want to take part at all, officially or unofficially (Naperville/Aurora/Lisle, for example, has North Central College, Aurora University and Benedicting University - this latter is KNOWN for bringing in speakers on "hot" topics). Hi, I've noticed you've been changing a lot of links to "Chicago, Illinois" to point directly to "Chicago". This is unnecessary -- the computational cost of changing an article to remove a redirect is thousands of times the cost of simply following the redirect. Please stop changing [[Chicago, Illinois]] to [[Chicago|Chicago, Illinois]]. You should never change an unbroken redirect to a direct link if the redirect properly reflects the article. It is a waste of Wikipedia resources to change the redirect per WP:REDIRECT.--Bobblehead 01:45, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

As per the other two users who have commented here in the past, please stop making changes to functioning redirects to Chicago. There is absolutely no logical reason for making these changes as doing so actually increases the server load by thousands of times what it would be if you left the redirect in place. Making these changes is wasteful and specifically, WP:Redirects states:

Most especially, there should never be a need to replace [[redirect]] with [[direct|redirect]].

Some editors are under the mistaken impression that fixing such links improves the capacity of the Wikipedia servers. Because editing a page is seemingly thousands of times more expensive for the servers than following a redirect, the opposite is true if anything.

Please stop. Changing these redirects wastes both server capacity and your time, which could be put to much better use making more beautiful pictures such as the one above this section. And don't worry, I made this mistake once myself when The West Wing (television) moved to The West Wing (TV series); it happens to the best of us.
