Dragonsfoot
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dragonsfoot is a community of old-school (primarily First Edition) Advanced Dungeons & Dragons players. The website was created in early 2001, but was revamped in May 2002 into its more familiar configuration.
The site is dedicated to out-of-print ("OOP") editions of Dungeons & Dragons. While it is primarily a source for First Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, it also features high quality fan-created material for Basic and Expert Dungeons & Dragons, Second Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons and Castles & Crusades.
Dragonsfoot promotes free gaming material. Modules, articles, new monsters and new spells can all be downloaded for free, together with Character Sheets, floorplans and Dungeon Master aides.
Dragonsfoot also has mulitple forums dedicated to the various editions of the game it supports. Its forums are a place where dedicated and knowledgeable fans of out-of-print games meet and discuss their hobbbies, creating a virtual community of gamers. DF is infamous in some gaming circles and on-line sites promoting the current edition of Dungeons & Dragons for having a strict "No Third Edition" policy. Although, discussion of Third Edition--referred to tongue-in-cheek as TETSNBN (The Edition That Shall Not Be Named) --is strongly discouraged and only permitted to be discussed in passing.[1]
In the past, there had been many flame wars on the DF forums between fans of the out-of-print editions and fans of the current edition. An Edition Wars forum was created to try to contain such flame wars as well as more reasoned discussions comparing editions. The Edition Wars forum--with some other forums covering other games--was even moved to a different server to try to isolate the main DF forums from the negativity. In the end, however, the administrators decided to shut down the Edition Wars and discourage discussion of Third Edition. They pointed out that there are plenty of other online forums to discuss Third Edition, but they wanted to keep the DF forums focused on providing a place to discuss out-of-print editions.[2])
Gary Gygax, the co-creator of D&D and the individual most credit with the development of the game, and many ex-TSR luminaries such as Frank Mentzer, Len Lakofka, Jim Ward, Robert Kuntz and Steve Marsh visit Dragonsfoot's forums fairly frequently. As he did on ENWorld, Gary Gygax has devoted a portion of his forum to answering questions from gamers about the games he has created over his career, including his current venture, Lejendary Adventures. Len Lakofka has continued to publish gaming material through Dragonsfoot, especially in DF's quarterly e-zine, Footprints.
