Dragon Valor is a video game created by Namco for the Sony PlayStation. It is a platform style hack and slash game, similar to the Golden Axe series on the Sega Mega Drive/Sega Genesis. Some RPG elements are also involved.

In the Dragon Valor world, dragons are horrible monsters with immense power. Your role, as a Dragon Valor, is to slay them with your magic sword.

The game has an interesting twist to the usual mundane action platformer. Who the main protragonist marries during the game will have an outcome as to who will lead the adventure after him. (Two choices in the first chapter, and depending on the choice made, a possible two choices in the second chapter.) This means the story has three potential paths in which it can lead, and hence three separate endings. However, the game never became very popular.

To begin with, you play as Clovis Barclay, a young man living in the land of Jirat. After a few cutscenes, we learn the core fundamentals of Clovis' tale: his sister Elena is killed by a dragon. After a basic tutorial of the moves and how to use the game's magic interface ( comaritively simple to other games of this genre) Clovis fights and vanquishes the dragon. But another dragon emerges from the corpse of the deceased dragon. Clovis, still in a fit of rage, swears that he will find and kill this dragon.

Thus we enter into the main story as far as Clovis is concerned. Having tracked the fugitive dragon for months, Clovis arrives in the kingdom of Raxis, where he engages in combat with some bandits. After the brawl, Clovis is introduced to Carolina, an inventor who was shopping for parts when the bandits attacked, and she fill Clovis in on the situation.

The Azale Knights, a military force of Jirat led by Volef, the Black Knight, had turned rogue, attacked Raxis Castle, home of the royal family, and taken Princess Cecilia (Not quite sure this is the name, haven't played the game for years, but wish I had a copy!) as hostage. Also siding with Volef was the alchemist and samurai, Raimun. Both received their powers from a mysterious source; the dragon which Clovis was pursuing.

After some minor details and a few stages, there is a critical storyline choice, where the player must choose to rescue the princess or not. This allows for a choice between the potential protagonists of the next chapter, Arlen Barclay, or Kodel Barclay. (There is a slight variation between the fighting styles of all characters you control, which keeps you on the back foot.)

In either case, this does not affect anything in the immediate chapter. After this trivial decision, Clovis duels Volef, who runs off like a coward when beaten, and heads for the alchemist's tower. After killing Raimun, who offers very little suggestion, Clovis finds his own way, using his sword to guide him th the dragon's location.

After this, Clovis faces a revived Volef, who is a bit stronger and twice as annoying as before. Again, Volef runs away after being defeated, only to lead Clovis to the dragon. The dragon considers Volef's usefulness to be at an end, and burns him to death just as Clovis arrives. Once the dragon is dead, Clovis realises that his vengeance has left him with nothing to do.

This is where the first chapter ends, and the choice of rescuing the princess or not is applied. If the princess was rescued, then the second chapter focuses on Arlen Barclay, heir to the throne of Raxis. If the princess wasn't rescued, then the second chapter will focus on Kodel Barclay, who makes a living stealing from pirates.

If the princess was rescued in the first chapter, then we learn the Clovis found peace with Cecilia, and his wounded heart was soothed. Later, the Kingdom of Raxis split into two factions, the East, which was ruled by the royal family, and the West, retitled Alkemia, which was led by Lodonya, Volef's son, and commander of the Azale Knights. However, the West Raxis Liberation Army, a resistance movement to Lodonya's rule, wishes to reunite Raxis into one Kingdom.

The whole dispute started because Cecilia married Clovis, a commoner. After the split between East and West, Lodonya turned up and took control of the West.
