Dragan Džajić

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dragan Džajić (Serbian Cyrillic: Драган Џајић) (born May 30, 1946 in Ub, Serbia) was a successful Serbian football player. Džajić's professional career spanned from 1961-1978.

He began and retired with Red Star Belgrade. In between these two periods he has been playing for Bastia in France (1975-1977). With Red Star, he has scored 108 goals and 31 more with Bastia.

At the age of 18, Džajić was named to the Yugoslavian national team. He made his debut June 17, 1964 against Romania. At the international level, he earned 85 caps (the most in the history of the Yugoslav national team) and 23 goals. No one could ever forget Dragan Džajić especially with amazing passing ability. One time Pele went on air saying that if there was one player he could play with it would have to be Dragan "Magic" Džajić. He earned the nickname Magic because his scoring and passing ability was unreal.

With an educational background in commerce and economics, Džajić would combine these skills, along with his immense knowledge of soccer, and become manager of Red Star Belgrade. As the years passed, he would also serve as club president.

In 2004 he resigned from the position due to, as he stated, "health issues".

In November 2003, to celebrate UEFA's Jubilee, he was selected as the Golden Player of Serbia and Montenegro by the Football Association of Serbia and Montenegro as their most outstanding player of the past 50 years. [1]
