Dr. Richard Aldrich

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dr. Richard Aldrich was a professor of art history from the University of Florida. He retired to Encinitas, California, where he became well known for building "The Castle". Built entirely out of concrete in the 1930's, it was one of the most well known architectual landmarks in the town of Encinitas. It was located on the seabluffs at Sealane and "H" street, located immediately north Of Parmahansa Yoganandas' Self Realization Fellowship property. When Dr. Aldrich died in the late 1970's, Dr. Aldrich's family removed the "valuable" contents and abandoned The Castle, covering the doors and windows with plywood.

Shortly there after, several local residents of Encinitas decided to remove the plywood, clean it up and took up residence in the castle. Two of these new residents, Kyle Thomas and Cosmo, worked hard in attempts to get The Castle declared as a historical landmark by the City of San Diego, but were unsuccessfull. The temporary residents of the Castle eventually moved out, after their three month summer stay. Unexplainably, within months after their departure, The Castle began to literally dissintergrate. The walls begain to crumble into rubble, and the walls of the northwest tower of The Castle collapsed, the roof falling to the floor. Within months, the structure was so broken down that it was beond repair. The Castle was eventually bulldozed to the ground, and condominiums were built on the site.

To this day nobody really knows the cause of The Castle's rappid "self distruction". Kyle speculated that possibly Dr. Aldrich had used Seawater to mix the concrete when constructing The Castle, causing an eventuall instabillity in the concrete.

Kyle Thomas, in conjunction with the San Dieguito Heritage Museum, located in Encinitas are currently attempting to locate photographs of The Castle to add to the photo archives of the museum, but so-far have not been able to locate any existing photos.
