Dr.K.Malathy

Dr.K.Malathy is a very accomplished lady, which is evident from the string of degrees she holds: M.Sc Chemistry, Ph.D Biochemistry, M.Sc Applied Nutrition, Diploma Forensic Toxicology, Cert. Nutrition, Ex-WHO Fellow. She served as the State Nutrition Coordination Officer to the Govt.of Kerala for a number of years and retired as the Joint Chemical Examiner to the Govt.of Kerala. Currently she works as a consultant in the fields of forensic toxicology and nutrition. She has authored 14 books related to the following subjects: Nutrition, Toxicology and Allied Health Sciences. She has been a regular columnist for the past 10 years in famous Malayalam magazines like Mathrubhumi, Aarogya Maasika.

Dr.K.Malathy lives in Trivandrum, Kerala with her husband, Mr.P.K.Ravindran (retd. Manager, Overseas Employment Development Corporation). They have two sons, Dr.Swathy Kumar and Nileema Kumar, a software engineer. She hails from Nedunganda, which is near to Varkala(Trivandrum District). She is the second daughter of late Mr.S.K.Asan and late Mrs.K.N.Kousalya.

After graduating with honours from the Benares Hindu University with a M.Sc degree in Chemistry, she pursued her Ph.D dreams in Biochemistry under the able guidance of Dr.P.A.Kurup and was awarded a Ph.D in Biochemistry by the University of Kerala in 1973 for her thesis titled, "Metabolism of glycosaminoglycans in alloxan diabetic rats". This work is much sort-after by diabetes researchers across the globe as is evident from the fact that it is cited as a major reference in many a diabetes-related Ph.D thesis bibiliography.

In 1980 she was awarded a WHO Fellowship which gave her the chance to go to the USA and do a six month certificate course in Nutrition. Her twin likings of Nutrition and Toxicology were translated into careers in both fields. For a large portion of her career life, she was devoted to the field of Nutrition, but her accomplishments in the field of Biochemistry made it possible for her to become the Joint Chemical Examiner to the Govt. of Kerala where she had to handle and testify in famous and politically sensitive cases like the Vypeen and Punalur liquor tragedy cases.
