Douglas College, established in 1970, is the largest college in British Columbia. Unlike universities like Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia, up until recently, Douglas College did not issue degrees. Starting in 2006, it grants Bachelors of Science degrees in Nursing and Psychiatric Nursing, and Bachelor of Therapeutic Recreation. Douglas College is often attended as a more affordable, educational "stepping stone" from high school to university for students who may require higher grades or certain prerequisites to attend SFU or UBC. The average enrollment period for a Douglas student is two years.

The college has two campuses, the main New Westminster campus and the David Lam campus in Coquitlam, which is currently undergoing a massive expansion. It also has a location at the Central City Shopping Centre complex in Surrey for part-time programs [1].

The college is named after the former Governor of British Columbia, Sir James Douglas, and the David Lam campus is named after a former Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia.

The student newspaper The Other Press has been in print since 1976, making it one of BC's oldest continuously run student publications.

Its sports teams are the Royals, with its mascot being a Lion. The Royals have three sports that compete in the U.S. which are the golf and baseball programs, both members of the NWAACC and wrestling which is a member of the NCWA Northwest.
