From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Douglas Carter Beane is an American playwright and screenwriter. Originally from Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, Beane now lives in New York.

His works include the screenplay of To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, as well as several theatrical works. His stage work includes writing the Broadway plays "The Little Dog Laughed" and the "As Bees in Honey Drown" which ran at New York's Lucille Lortel Theatre in 1997. Beane often writes works with sophisticated, "drawing room" humor.

Beane wrote the book for a stage musical adaptation of the 1980 film, Xanadu. Readings of the adaptation, using his book and songs from the film's soundtrack, were held April 21 and August 3, 2006, in Manhattan. Eric Stern was musical director.[1] A Broadway workshop production and backers' audition using Beane's book was held at the Minetta Lane Theater in January 2007, which featured performances by Jane Krakowski, Tony Roberts and Cheyenne Jackson, and directed by Chris Ashley. If the Broadway production is confirmed, it will open at the Helen Hayes Theater in April 2007, with a budget of $5 million.[2]

Beane is also the artistic director of the Drama Dept. Theater Company in New York.
