Douglas C. Waller is an author and correspondent for Time magazine. His books include Commandos: The Making of America's Secret Soldiers, from Training to Desert Storm (1994), Air Warriors: The Inside Story of the Making of a Navy Pilot (1998), Big Red: The Three-Month Voyage of a Trident Nuclear Submarine (2001), and A Question of Loyalty: Gen. Billy Mitchell and the Court-Martial that Gripped the Nation (2004).

Waller describes the everyday life of the crew of the Trident Submarine USS Nebraska during a three-month patrol. He was given full access to the Nebraska’s daily operations and classified machinery, and he offers insight into what goes on in the crew members' minds while they're on board.
