From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Doug Pinnick (born September 3, 1950 in Braidwood, Illinois) is the bassist and lead vocalist for the progressive metal band King's X. He is an African American, but claims he has other races in his blood.

He mainly plays a 4-string electric bass, but has played a 12-string bass before, on King's X's earlier tours. He provides the lead vocals for the band, but the other members chime in with him at times.

[edit] Projects

When he is not in King's X, he's jamming in his solo project, Poundhound, which has released two albums, Massive Grooves From The Electric Church Of Psychofunkadelic Grungelism Rock Music and Pineappleskunk, with King's X drummer Jerry Gaskill on drums. Doug was also a member of the short-lived band, Supershine, with long-time Trouble guitarist, Bruce Franklin. Supershine released only one self-titled album in 2000 on Metal Blade Records. Doug dropped the Poundhound moniker for his latest album, Emotional Animal (August 2, 2005), instead crediting himself as "dUg Pinnick." The album, released by Magna Carta Records, features Gaskill's son, Joy, on drums. He sang lead vocals on the eponymous debut album by former Winger guitarist Reb Beach's band The Mob, released in 2005. He has also sung guest vocals on Dream Theater's "Lines In The Sand" from the Falling into Infinity album and on "Welcome To The Machine" from the An All Star Lineup Performing the Songs of Pink Floyd album.

Doug stood in for lead singer Corey Glover on Living Colour's European tour in August 2006.

[edit] History

Pinnick grew up as a Christian, though he never let anyone know that he was secretly attracted to men. The only other people that knew were his bandmates. This took a harsh toll on his life as it made him feel very depressed, frustrated and lost. He finally told the world about it through a 1998 interview by rock critic and author Mark Joseph in RQ Magazine in which he came out of the closet as gay and attributed his homosexuality to being molested as a child. He relieved some of his pain and subsequently stated that he stopped believing in God so he could finally achieve happiness. He later claimed he still has a relationship with God but does not worship Him. He also claims to have never had a boyfriend. After he announced that he was gay, many longtime fans who were Christian dropped their loyalty to the band.
