[edit] Cleanup
We need to have reference images of all the characters on this page! This cartoon rules. I've got the soundtrack. There needs to be more detail and pictures here. --Cyberman 05:01, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- I don't think this requires a clean-up tag. Why else does this page need cleanup? If for no other reason, I propose removing the tag.
[edit] Ethnocentrism
Just changed part of the last sentence to make it less "USA-centric". -Dora (Sept. 10,2004).
But, this diversity is very limited, and would be much more enjoyable for all cultures if a French girl and a Japanese girl, for example, make friend with Dora and accompany her on some of the upcoming quests.
In a way that very similar thing happened on "Dora's World Adventure." as she had a friend in France and even though they didn't go to Japan she had a friend in China.Even so I think Dora's new friends from other countries, along with the four other "Swipers" should make appearances later on. Also I love this show even though I way past the age limit. a kid at heart Superx 03:18, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
Re Dora's provenance and residence: In the discussion of Dora's nationality and the location of her home, I think speculation that, for example, she lives in Mexico or California misses the whole point of the show - she doesn't seem to live in our world at all, and I suspect that's intentional on the part of the creators. Dora's home appears to be a fantasy world in terms of geography (as well as of characters and situations), defying attempts to pin down a location. I would guess that, if the creators of the show ever even thought about it, they would agree that refusing to tie Dora and her friends to a recognizable location enhances the show's universality. In this way, they avoid the trap of inadvertently causing people to think "Learning Spanish is fine for people in the Southwestern US, but not really relevant to MY kids", or some such. Of course, they may just have thought, "Blue bulls and Spanish-speaking vest-wearing squirrels aren't really found in California OR Guatemala, let's not be too specific about location." Either way, I don't think Dora can meaningfully be thought to live in any real place.
Dora's surname and her mother's surname are different because in Spanish cultures women don't take the husband's name when they get married.
[edit] Swiper
Is Swiper the Fox a back-handed reference to Mexican president Vincente Fox?
Well, #1, it's just a kids show, so there's probably no razor-bladed political satire in it, and #2, foxes have pretty much always been typecast as villains, so it's a pretty big stretch. 71.231.56.40 23:28, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Special Edition DVDs?
Since the series is so popular, should there be Special Edition DVDs, with all the dubbed versions? --User:Angie Y.
I clicked on the link for the creator of the show and got the page for a Canadian Hockey Player with the same name. I'm not 100% sure but I doubt if this is the same person. Dora is never mentioned/
[edit] Names of the characters and episodes in Japanese
What are the names of the characters and episodes in Japanese? --User:Angie Y.
[edit] Korean Edition DVD
I just purchased 18 episodes in Korean language: http://www.yesasia.com/PrdDept.aspx/pid-1004107051 http://www.yesasia.com/PrdDept.aspx/pid-1004107093 http://www.yesasia.com/PrdDept.aspx/pid-1004107128 Do these qualify Korean to be included as a foreign language version? I don't know whether they had been broadcast on TV, though.
[edit] Current Events
"On the weekend on May 5th, 2006, Dora the Explorer was booked for the Scotiabank Place arena in Ottawa. At the same time, in the NHL Playoffs, the Ottawa Senators were in the midst of a series with the Buffalo Sabres. The Senators lost the first game, but had to wait until the weekend was over to play the next game. May commentators and fans believe that if the game had been played closer to the time of the first game, the Senators would have been able to rebound. They lost the second game of the series on the Monday.[1]"
I removed this to the talk page, as the relevance to Dora appears to be tenuous at best, and seems to have more to do with the NHL than with the event that interrupted the playoffs. Lusanaherandraton 04:04, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Billions of dollars claims
How could one category of merchandise possibly achieve over $3 billion? How much has SpongeBob made? Marcus 22:58, 1 Jul 2006 (UTC)
- SpongeBob has made $4.5 billion in cumulative retail sales.[2] While it might be surprising or counter-intuitive given the relatively low price of each item, but the volumes of units sold are huge, as are the global markets which buy them. Nickelodeon is hardly alone in collecting massive revenues from its characters; consider that Disney consumer products is expecting to generate $23 billion in sales in 2006 [3]. --ScottMainwaring 00:19, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Clearifi
Someone recently put that Dora's friend Isa is in love with Boots and that they got this info from an event can somone ether prove this event or fix this? Superx 17:22, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
Nevermind I looked into with the person and found out that it is indeed true, I was only worrored due to the large amount of vandalizm that was on this page before the protection was put on it. Sorry Superx 11:16, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Clarification Needed on Character
I have just been reading this page for the first time proper, and notice that somewhere in the page there is a reference to Dora's Cousin, who is Diego's Sister. The name listed for Diego's Sister is Daisy, but on the DVD I have (of Go, Diego Go!), Diego's Sister is called Alicia. Could I please get some clarification on this, since both appear to be listings from the original version. I just wonder if I am missing something like maybe Diego has more than one sister, or the possibility that someone bogged up somewhere??? Thanks. Thor Malmjursson 14:23, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
Diego has two sisters, Daisy is his 15 year old sister who appeared sevarl times over Dora the Explorer but has yet to appear in Go, Diego, Go, Alicia is his 11 year old sister who appears once in Dora and is a central character on Go, Diego, Go. My own idea based off the show is since Daisy was seen on a soccer team in a Televised game (see "Dora saves the game episode for detells) she might be a professional and thus travaling Alicia works at their parents animal rescue center with Diego which would explane why Daisy doesn't appear in Go, Diego, go. Hope that helps. Superx 22:04, 18 January 2007 (UTC) P.S. I will add Alicia to the character list to aviod future confusion
[edit] Did Cheech Marin voice King Bobo on Dora?
In one of the episodes, I could have sworn that King Bobo was voiced by Cheech Marin. If I'm right about that, I'd like to add him to the list of voices. But I'm not totally certain the voice was really him. Does anyone else remember Cheech Marin doing that voice? Steve8675309 23:09, 20 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] VANDALIZUM
This page was just taken off protection a little bit ago and there's aleady been VANDALIZUM. This is a children's show article for pete's sake. Do vandals care that people might take their little kids here to read? Will someone please do something because if there's one thing I can't stand this is it. I'll revert vandalizum as best I can and I've suggested a wikiproject to protect children's shows if anyones intrested but I just want this to stop. concerned Superx 01:25, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
Sorry about the problem I cause with the info box but the vandal made his vandalizum in a way that I couldn't revert it without doing that. Superx 02:24, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
The character section "Dora" was vandalized. I reverted it to the original state, meaning I directly took the description someone else made. I hope this doesn't bother anyone... Passum 04:46, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] A page for Swiper?
Question for a vote: Considering that Swiper's section is longer than anyone else's, and that the cartoon has been expanding his character lately, do you think Swiper should be given his own separate Wikipedia page? Wrightaway 04:56, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] SPANISH
Has anyone noticed that Dora does not speak that much Spanish?
Yearh i have and she dosnt --Rebeccarulz123 00:01, 12 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Background
Someone told me that Dora is Filippina. Has her origin ever been noted?--216.19.177.73 04:49, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
I thought she was always Spanish.
[edit] Vandalism
Pretty sure this doesn't belong here:
Dora She is an illegal immigrant who needs to speak only english. 24.186.199.237 23:54, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
But the point of the show is to learn Spanish.
The page currently has a line in the "Other Characters" section that states: "Dora Jr. the son of Dora when Boots rapes her. He kills himself." Under the section "Boots," it states: "He also gets Dora in a back ally and violently rapes her, making her pregnant and she has a strange monkey-boy, who kills itself."
What's worse, it doesn't appear to be editable....
- Don't see it. And ANYTHING is editable in articles on wiki. Please sign your posts with the 4 ~ twiddles to, thanks. --Xiahou 21:43, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Criticism section?
Would it be worthwhile to add a criticism section to this page. Some common criticisms of this (and the spin-off, Go_Diego_Go) are:
- It's not very beneficial to teach children a second language when the English grammar used in the shot is so poor (e.g., "if there's a place you gotta go").
- Dora and the monkey, Boots, seem to enforce bad manners. They rarely say please, instead whining and yelling at the audience to do things.
- There is no parental presence in the show, just a child and her (wild animal) pet wandering around to far away places.
- As mentioned above, why just Spanish? Why not introduce characters of other cultures more often? The show Noddy on PBS does this, introducing children to multiple langueges in special shorts.
71.169.5.9 15:34, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
I take issue with you on at least 2 of these areas - you state these are common criticisms of Dora and Go Diego Go. Let me list what I take issue on:
- "There is no parental presence in the show, just a child and her (wild animal) pet wandering around to far away places." - Dora's Mom is seen in the show on a couple of occasions, and also older relatives of Dora, such as her elder cousin Daisy, appear at least once. Also if you look at Go, Diego, Go! You will discover that Diego's parents are extremely visible in the show.
- "As mentioned above, why just Spanish? Why not introduce characters of other cultures more often?" - There are characters in Dora the Explorer who appear when they go to other countries, such as Fifi the Skunk in France, and Ying Yang in China (These are alternatives to Swiper the Fox). I admit that this is not the case in Diego, but I am sure it won't be long in coming. Thor Malmjursson 12:32, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
I think you are right, we do need a criticism section.
Thanks for the response. I guess what I should have said was parental _guidance_. Small children going to places for which they need a map for directions just seems a bit odd to me. Now, don't peg me as one of those "cancel Beavis and Butthead" parents, because I don't think it's that big a deal...just, well, odd. I have seen the larger familial presence that you mentioned in Diego, but not in my limited viewing in Dora. My son only recently began watching it, and we watch the episodes on Noggin_(TV_channel) which are a limited run, I think.
The Spanish language thing is not a huge deal to me either. I am more disturbed by the poor English grammar and the poor manners. I think those are the things kids will latch onto rather than wandering off or trying to tame a small wild animal and would be most suitable for a criticism section. :) Have a good day. 71.169.5.9 13:41, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] EDUCATIONAL
I have to say, Dora The Explorer is not educational. I mean, how much Spanish does she really speak? She hardly ever speaks Spanish. The point of the Dora The Explorer is to show young kids Spanish, not go on adventures with wild animals to "magic castle" and only speak English. How many episodes has she really spoken Spanish in? Anyway, what's with the exploring part? She is not much of an explorer. She asks us to look at the map, like she doesn't have eyes, and yet she calls herself an explorer! Dora, you call yourself an explorer? Take a second look in the mirror, girl!
Your right all she says is hola and moi bien once in a while. Its stupid --Rebeccarulz123 00:01, 12 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Criticism Section
I think we need a criticsm section for Dora the Explorer. She's really not that educational.
The programme is aimed at children aged 2-5 the level of spanish introduced is well balanced, clear, appropriate and repeated enough to mean something. it focusses on simple greeting words, colours and numbers. Exactly as it should. Try watching it with a 3 year old, encourage them to interact with the programme and learn new words, then claim it is not educational. In addition, the foreign language element is secondary. dora encourages children to plan ahead, to think of solutions, to make decisions and guess outcomes. These are very clearly planned carefully and are all critical thinking skills which children desperately need and all too often lack. Brideshead 20:02, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
