Dorothea Klumpke

Dorothea Klumpke Roberts (August 9, 1861 - 1942) was an astronomer. She was born in San Francisco, California and moved to Europe in 1877. She studied at the University of Paris, where she received her bachelor's degree in 1886 and her doctorate in 1893. In 1899, astronomers had predicted a great meteor shower know was the Leonids. The French chose a female astronomer - Dorothea Klumpke - to be the one to ride in a balloon to observe the shower. She was elected a Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1934. Minor planets 339 Dorothea and 1040 Klumpkea were named in her honor.
