Dornburg

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dornburg is a town in the Saale-Holzland district, in Thuringia, Germany. It sits atop a small hill of 400 ft above the Saale. It has a population 1042. Dornburg is a very old town, but is mainly known for its three grand ducal castles (of the former grand-dukes of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach). First, there is the Alte Schloss, which is built on the site of an imperial stronghold (a Kaiserpfalz), once acting as defense against the Slavs. It also served as a residence of the emperors Otto II and Otto III, and where the emperor Henry II held a diet in 1005. Next is the Neues Schloss, which was done in an Italian style of architecture. It was built between the years of 1728-1748, and featured pretty gardens which drew the likes of Goethe. The third and southern most of the three is the socalled Stohmannsches Rittergut, purchased in 1824 and fitted as a modern palace.
