The Donut King chain was founded in 1981 and is currently owned by the Gold Coast-based Retail Food Group Limited. Retail Food Group Limited also owns the bb's cafe franchise system which incorporates 70 stores within Australia and New Zealand. As at 9 March 2007, there were 280 Donut King stores situated in Australia.

Besides doughnuts, Donut King also serves a large variety of other beverages and food items, such as coffee and teas, soft drinks, milkshakes, 'quakeshakes', soft-serve ice cream, toasts and hot dogs. Many of these are offered along with doughnuts as part of a promotion or "meal deal".
