Donax is a genus of bivalve mollusk found on tropical and temperate coasts worldwide. Members of this genus are generally filter feeding and some species, such as Donax variabilis, migrate vertically and horizontally with changes in the tides.

Coquina is a common name for some species of Donax. D. variabilis is the common coquina of the Atlantic and Gulf shores of the United States. It is locally abundant on beaches with fine sand from Long Island (New York) to Texas, and likely beyond. The small (15-25mm) shells may be found on the beach, especially at low tide, and the living animal can be see in the littoral on the changing tide, where it uses the action of waves to move itself up and down the beach, burrowing in quickly in its new location before it can be swept away (the so-called "dance of the coquina").
Donax deltoides is found on the eastern coast of Australia.
