- Aelius Donatus, a Roman grammarian and teacher of rhetoric
- Donatus Magnus, a (4th century CE) bishop of Carthage who founded the heretic Donatist sect
- The monk Donatus (5th century CE) who left Roman Africa during one of the Vandal persecutions and established monastic life in Valencia, Spain.
- Saint Donatus of Fiesole, an Irish monk who became bishop of Fiesole in 824
