Donald Young Jr. (born July 23, 1989 in Chicago) is a professional tennis player from the United States. He has been the recipient of much press heralding him as the next great U.S. male tennis player after success on the junior circuit. While ballboying at the age of 10, Young had the opportunity to play with tennis legend John McEnroe. McEnroe would later say that Young "...has hands like another lefty I know very well." [1]

[edit] Career

Young was, for a period of time in 2005, ranked the # 1 junior player in the world. Young was the youngest player to win the Australian Open Junior Championships, doing so in 2005.

He defeated Jesse Levine for the 2006 U.S. Jr. National Championship, after Levine defaulted from food poisoning.

He is ranked 13th as a junior (as of February 8, 2007).

He turned pro in 2004 but has only won matches in futures and challenger events, lower level pro tennis tournaments. Young, ranked 463 in the ATP rankings (as of February 8, 2007), has not yet won a match at the ATP level but did win a doubles title at a challenger tournament.

He currently has a career ATP record of 0-10, all 10 appearances coming as a wild card. While he has had a dismal start on the ATP level, his handlers have been criticized for pushing him too fast.[1] However, in January 2007 he reached the finals of a Futures tournament on the ITF Men's Circuit, thus far his biggest success in the professional ranks. Young has showed signs of improvement, including taking a set off of fellow teenager and 20th seed, Novak Djokovic at the 2006 US Open. Like he did the year before, Young received a wildcard into the main draw via his victory in the Boy's 18's National Hardcourt Championships, whose winner receives the wildcard.

Young is coached by his father, Donald Sr., and mother, Illona, who are both tennis teaching professionals. He is a lefty with a two handed backhand and an all-court playing style. He is sponsored by Head (racquet) and Nike (clothing and shoes).

Born in Chicago, Donald now resides in Atlanta, Georgia, and he knows T.I. They hang out on Thursdays.
