Donald Kaufman

Donald Kaufman is the fictional twin brother of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, and was created for the film Adaptation.. He was also given a writing credit and was the first (and only) fictional person nominated for an Academy Award (for Adapted Screenplay). He is said to have died during preproduction of Adaptation., although some suggested[citation needed] that if he did win the award, Spike Jonze (who directed Adaptation.) or Nicolas Cage (who played Donald and Charlie in it) would play him and accept it. Donald was also nominated with Charlie for, among others, a Golden Globe Award and a BAFTA Award, which they won.

The DVD edition of Adaptation. contains a filmography which lists Donald Kaufman as having written Adaptation. and The 3, a screenplay he writes in Adaptation. The credits of the film close with the words "in loving memory of Donald Kaufman".
