A Domina, according to the Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913), was a term in Old English Law. It was a title formerly given to noble ladies who held a barony in their own right. [1]

In modern usage, the word domina has come to refer to a female who plays the role of a dominant in any of a variety of BDSM practices. A professional dominatrix is likely to use this title.

The word domina can be found in the historical novel Quo Vadis, used as a respectful salutation towards aristocratic Roman matrons. [2]

Barbara Wood´s first book is Domina. It is about an emancipated woman on her way to becoming a leader in the rapidly developing medicine of the late 19th century.
