Dolores is a common given name, cognate with the English word "dolour" (meaning suffering) and equivalent in meaning; In Spanish, where it is most prevalent, it is short for la Virgen María de los Dolores, "Virgin Mary of dolours" and is often shortened to the more colloquial forms Lola, Lolita or Loli.
