Dog Logan was a servant on the Howlett estate in the late 19th century, located in Alberta, Canada. His father, Thomas Logan, also worked on the estate for the Howletts. As an adolescent, Dog was the playmate of James Howlett, then a sickly boy and the family's youngest son, and Rose, an orphan brought to the estate to look after James. The three children were good friends, and at one point, Dog saved James from drowning in a river. However, Thomas, an abusive alcoholic, frequently beat Dog and berated him for spending time with members of the upper class. Eventually, Thomas' abusive treatment of Dog began to warp his mind.

As a young teenager, Dog became cruel and sadistic and made unwanted advances toward Rose. James, witnessing Dog's sexually assaulting Rose, reported the incident to his father. In retaliation, Dog killed James' dog, resulting in Dog and Thomas's expulsion from the estate. Enraged, Thomas returned to the Howlett estate with Dog and forced his way into the room of Elizabeth, James' mother and a mentally disturbed recluse. Thomas told Elizabeth that he was leaving and that he was taking her with him. When Thomas and Dog were discovered by James and his father John, the confrontation quickly escalated and Thomas shot and killed John Howlett. Upon witnessing the murder of his father, James attacked Thomas and Dog with his newly emerged claws, killing Thomas and slashing Dog's face, leaving three large scars upon it. After James and Rose fled the house, Elizabeth killed herself in front of Dog. As the only survivor left at the scene when the police arrived, Dog reported that Rose was the killer.

Years later, Dog was hired by James' dying grandfather to track James. Dog accepted, but with the intention to kill James rather than return him to his grandfather. Now fully grown, Dog was large in stature (roughly 6 1/2 feet) and extremely strong. He appeared to have light brown or dirty blond hair instead of the dark brown hair he had during childhood. His ears were leaf shaped and he had unusually pronounced canines.

When he found James in a mining town, Dog rigged a cage fight between James and another worker, and then attacked James himself. He claimed that he was the murderer of James' father, despite the fact that the true killer was his father Thomas; it is unknown if this was a deliberate lie or a memory loss on the part of Dog. James defeated Dog, but before James could kill him, Rose ran to James to stop him and was fatally wounded by James' claws. James then fled into the forest, leaving Dog.

[edit] Theories and rumors

Due to the fact that Thomas Logan had an affair with Elizabeth Howlett, readers suspect that Thomas may have been the true father of James Howlett. This would explain the striking similarity between Thomas and James' appearance as an adult, and would also make Dog James' half-brother. If this were the case, Dog may have also been a mutant and may have possessed abilities similar to those of James, such as a healing factor.

It should be noted that in many cases recently in Marvel comics a regenerative healing factor is a secondary mutation that does not appear until later in a mutant's life, such as when Archangel developed his.

Another source of speculation is the fate of Dog after the events of Origin. What happened to him is unknown, but many fans believe that he survived to become Sabretooth, Wolverine's archenemy. The theory is based on Dog's physical similarity to Sabretooth, as well as the theory that Dog also possessed a healing factor, which would allow him to live as long as Wolverine. Co-writer Paul Jenkins has stated that he did not personally intend Dog to be the same person as Sabretooth, but he has left it the possibility open for future writers to explore.

[edit] Powers and abilities

Dog was enormous in size, psychopathic, and appeared to have razor-sharp teeth. He had an unusually high resistance to the elements and a seemingly preternatural skill for tracking. It is unclear whether or not he had a healing factor, as he still displayed faded scars on his face years after being attacked by James. He was extremely strong, able to hit James with adequate force to send his entire body flying through the air. It is unknown whether this strength was the result of being a mutant or not.
