DJ Static

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

DJ Static (Mike Lai) started listening to hip-hop in 1988 when he first arrived in Vancouver, Canada from Hong Kong. He quickly fell in love with golden era hip-hop, bumping tapes by giants like Big Daddy Kane, Eric B & Rakim, and Public Enemy, and listening to underground college radio mix shows. In 1994, he bought his first Tech 1200s and got in the mix.

In addition to doing WEFUNK Radio, DJ Static held a weekly breakers' night in Montreal called Rockdeep Tuesdays from 2001 to 2004 with the help of Professor Groove (WeFunk Radio's co-host) and CheebaCheebaKid. He can be found playing at most major breaking events in Montreal, including Maximum Heat, Call-Out, Perfect Execution, and at Montreal's annual international graffiti expo Under Pressure. Having honed his party rocking skills as one of the busiest DJs in Montreal, DJ Static has also taken his brand of hip-hop and funk to lands as far away as Switzerland and Hong Kong.

DJ Static is a member of Nomadic Massive, a multicultural multilingual hip-hop crew with Argentinian, Chilean, Chinese, French, Haitian, and Iraqi members. They were invited to perform at the Havana Hip-Hop Festival in Cuba in 2004. DJ Static also dedicates much time to organizing benefit shows for a range of causes including Prisoners' Justice Day, Palestinian Solidarity, and hurricane and tsunami relief.
