Dixmont, Maine

Dixmont is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,065 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Bangor, Maine Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located at (44.6813, -69.1281)GR1, at the intersection of US Route 202 and Penobscot County Road 7 between the towns of Jackson, Newburgh, Plymouth, and Troy, about 8 miles south of I-95.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 94.5 km² (36.5 mi²). 94.1 km² (36.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it (0.41%) is water. It is many hills and valleys, but nothing that qualifies as mountains.

Dixmont shares an elementary school with the nearby town of Etna (called Etna-Dixmont School) but has no high school. For high school students must go to high school in nearby Newport or Bangor.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 1,065 people, 411 households, and 314 families residing in the town. The population density was 11.3/km² (29.3/mi²). There were 474 housing units at an average density of 5.0/km² (13.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.59% White, 0.38% Native American, 0.47% Asian, and 0.56% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.19% of the population.
There were 411 households out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.0% were married couples living together, 8.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.6% were non-families. 17.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 2.88.
In the town the population was spread out with 24.2% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44, 29.0% from 45 to 64, and 9.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 100.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $33,654, and the median income for a family was $36,607. Males had a median income of $29,844 versus $26,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $15,826. About 14.1% of families and 16.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 27.5% of those under age 18 and 16.0% of those age 65 or over.
