Talk:Divisions of Cameroon

[edit] Nomenclature

There was some confusion earlier today as to which term is preferred for the Cameroonian subnational unit below the province. The French word is département, which leads to the English department. However, the term division is also used in English. All sources do not agree on whether division or department should be preferred in English, so here's a rundown on what source recommends which term:

Division: Gwanfogbe and Melingui, Geography of Cameroon; Neba, Modern Geography of the Republic of Cameroon; Macmillan School Atlas for Cameroon; Ngoh, History of Cameroon Since 1800; Government of Cameroon webpage.

Department: statoids.com; apparently the UN, but I can't find the webpage that says so.

At any rate, I believe we've settled at divisions for now. If anyone writes articles on specific divisions, be sure to create appropriate redirects from X department to X division. — BrianSmithson 00:52, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
