Division of Shortland
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Division of Shortland is an Australian Electoral Division in the state of New South Wales. It is located on the Central coast region of New South Wales, just south of Newcastle. The Division closely follows the Pacific coast, on average extending only five or ten kilometres inland. Much of the western boundary is formed by Lake Macquarie. The Division stretches from Charlestown in the north to Norah Head in the south, and also includes the towns of Toukley, Doyalson, Swansea, Belmont and Gateshead.
The Division was named after Lt John Shortland, an early explorer of the Hunter Valley region. The Division was proclaimed at the redistribution of May 11, 1949, and was first contested at the 1949 Federal election. The seat is currently a fairly safe Labor seat.
