Division of Herbert
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Division of Herbert is an Australian Electoral Division in Queensland. The division was created in 1901, and was first contested at the 1901 election. It is located in northern Queensland, and is named for Sir Robert Herbert, the first Premier of Queensland (1859-1866). On its original boundaries it extended from Mackay to the Torres Strait, but today it has been cut back to little more than the city of Townsville. The seat has been a bellwether for Federal electoral results the past three decades, having consistently changed between Labor and Liberal Members in the same way as changes in Government. At the 2004 election the Liberal Party's Peter Lindsay retained the seat by a margin of 6.2%.[1] It will be hotly contested in the 2007 Election with local identity and businessman George Colbran preselected by Labor to contest Herbert.

In 1939, Fred Paterson stood successfully as an alderman for the Townsville City Council, becoming the first member of the Communist Party to win such an office in Australia. He was then re-elected in 1943. The same year, he stood for the federal seat of Herbert, but was narrowly defeated.
