Discovery Handicap

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Discovery Handicap is a Grade III dirt race for Thoroughbred horses open to three-year-olds of either gender run in the fall at Aqueduct Race Track. Set at a distance of One and one eighth miles, it offers a purse of $100,000.

In its 63rd running in 2007, the race honors the great Discovery, the champion handicap horse of 1936 owned and raced by Alfred G. Vanderbilt II. In the list of the top 100 U.S. thoroughbred champions of the 20th Century by Blood-Horse magazine, Discovery ranks 37th.

Based at Aqueduct, the Discovery Handicap was run at Belmont Park from 1945 to 1958, and in 1960, 1961, 1968, 1969, and 1970.

In one year, 1974, the Discovery was run in two divisions.
