Dirk IV, Count of Holland

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dirk IV was Count of Holland from 1039 to 1049 (which was called Frisia at that time). He continued the policy of his father to enlarge the realm and came in conflict with the bishop of Utrecht, other bishops and monasteries in the surrounding area. Emperor Henry III personally led to expeditions against him. Rijnsburg and Vlaardingen were destroyed by the imperial army in 1047, but the emperor had to retreat. The bishops of Utrecht, Liege and Metz ambushed and killed him near Dordrecht in 1049.
