Diplophos rebainsi Krefft & Parin, 1972 |
Diplophos rebainsi is a bristlemouth of the family Gonostomatidae, found in the south-east and west Pacific, and the South Atlantic oceans, at depths down to 2,000 m. Its length is between 15 and 25 cm.
Diplophos rebainsi, which has no common name, is a small elongate ribbon-like fish, one of the largest of the bristlemouths. Its eyes are set well forward over its large, sharp-toothed mouth, and unusually for this family it probably feeds on other small fishes. There is one dorsal fin about halfway along the back, and an elongate anal fin ending close to the low forked caudal fin.
There are two rows of small photophores along each side of the belly and a few over the head. All fins are transparent, except the caudal fin which has melanophores, and slight pigmentation on the dorsal fin.
The head is grey to black-brown in color, and the sides of body are pale yellow with darker dotted pigmentation.
