Dionigi Bussola

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dionigi or Dionisio Bussola ( Lombardy, c. 1615 -Milan, 1687) was an Italian sculptor active mainly near Milan during the Baroque era.

He initially trained in Rome with Ercole Ferrata, but returned to Milan in 1645, to work in statuary for the Cathedral of Milan. His son Cesare Bussola, also a sculptor, was born in 1653. Dionigi also contributed sculptural reliefs of the early life of Christ to the Certosa of Pavia. In addition to his work in the Cathedral and Certosa, he began making statuary for the Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy, which are pilgrimage sites in Northern Italy. These elaborate dioramas of pious scenes are a Lombard tradition. For nearly two decades (1666-1684), he worked in the Sacri Monti of Orta[1], Varallo, Varese, and Domodossola. For the Sacro Monte of San Francesco in Orta, he alone created hundreds of terracotta figures.
