Diomede, Alaska

Diomede is a city in Nome Census Area, Alaska, United States. At the 2000 census the population was 146.

The community of Diomede is located on the western face of Little Diomede Island in the Bering Strait. The entire island is incorporated into the city. Its residents are primarily of Inalikmiut (Inupiaq) Eskimo origin.

Diomede is located at 65°45′35″N, 168°55′39″W (65.759836, -168.927592)^GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.356 km² (2.84 mi²), all land.

As of the census^GR2 of 2000, there were 146 people, 43 households, and 31 families residing in the city. The population density was 19.8/km² (51.4/mi²). There were 47 housing units at an average density of 6.4/km² (16.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 6.16% White, 92.47% Native American, and 1.37% from two or more races.

There were 43 households out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 20.9% were married couples living together, 32.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.9% were non-families. 18.6% of all households were made up of individuals and none had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.40 and the average family size was 4.00.

In the city the population was spread out with 43.8% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 17.1% from 45 to 64, and 6.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 22 years. For every 100 females there were 114.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 121.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $23,750, and the median income for a family was $24,583. Males had a median income of $41,250 versus $26,875 for females. The per capita income for the city was $9,944. There were 41.4% of families and 35.4% of the population living below the poverty line, including 33.8% of under eighteens and 44.4% of those over 64.
