The Diocese of Nelson is one of seven dioceses of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia. The Diocese covers the top part of the South Island of New Zealand, which is mostly the area north of a line drawn from Greymouth to Kaikoura.

The seat of the Bishop of Nelson is at Christ Church Cathedral in Nelson. The diocese was founded in 1858.

On 5 February 2007, while in a wheelchair, [1] Richard Ellena was consecrated as Bishop of Nelson.

Richard, who is 55, succeeds Derek Eaton. He was Bishop Derek Eaton’s Vicar General, or deputy, since 2002 – and he has pledged to continue to “hold high the flag of evangelical orthodoxy” during his term as the Diocese of Nelson’s 10th Bishop.

Nelson diocese is a noted Evangelical diocese.[2]
