Dinitrogenase

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dinitrogenase (formerly called nitrogenase) is just one enzyme of several involved with the fixation of nitrogen. Nitrogen is reduced from one molecular nitrogen to two ammonia molecules within the Fe-Mo-co (Iron-Molybdenum complex) of dinitrogenase. This process requires a total of 8 electrons; 6 electrons are used directly to reduce nitrogen and 2 other electrons are used for the formation of molecular hydrogen from two protons. The purpose of the latter use of electrons is unknown.
