The music was written by Harry Akst, the lyrics by Sam M. Lewis and Joe Young. The song was published in 1925. It was introduced by Eddie Cantor in "Kid Boots" that year in Pittsburgh.
It was immensely popular with jazz bands of the period and beyond, with versions by Ethel Waters, Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Benny Goodman and even Thelonious Monk.
