Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (Devanagari: दिलवाले दुल्हनिया ले जायेंगे, Urdu: ﮯﮜ ﮞﯿﺎﺠ ﮯﻟ ﺎﯿﻧﮩﻠﺩ ﮮﺍﻭﻟﺩ), also known as DDLJ (English: The One with a Heart Will Take the Bride) is an Indian film which premiered on October 19, 1995 and was released nationwide on October 20, 1995. The film was made by Aditya Chopra, and stars Shahrukh Khan, Kajol, and Amrish Puri. As of June 2006, the film had made the record books by completing 570 weeks of continuous play in Maratha Mandir, a Mumbai cinema. It is still showing there.
There are fisticuffs, comic interludes, and a stern father insisting on an arranged marriage. However, there are also fresh, new elements. Filmed in Switzerland, it was one of the first Bollywood films to feature Indians living outside India.
The film was included in the Cinema India showcase, "The Changing Face of Indian Cinema", which toured the United States in July and August 2004. Film critic Charles Taylor of Salon.com wrote:
- "It's a flawed, contradictory movie — aggressive and tender, stiff and graceful, clichéd and fresh, sophisticated and naive, traditional and modern. It's also, I think, a classic."[1]

[edit] Synopsis
Raj and Simran, played by Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, are young Indians living in the United Kingdom. Simran meets Raj on a graduation trip, and after some initial misadventures, they fall in love. Simran goes home and tells her family about her romance. Her father, played by Amrish Puri, will have nothing to do with a love marriage, and is adamant that she marry his best friend's son, to whom she has been promised since she was born. Her mother wants to spare Simran, but cannot sway the domineering father. Simran finally agrees to the marriage and her family returns to the Punjab. Their large family compound and the groom's household bustle with preparations for a lavish wedding.
Raj, however, does not give up so easily. He follows Simran to the Punjab and meeting her privately, assures her that he will save her from the arranged marriage. However, he refuses to elope with Simran. He wants to marry her with the consent of her father. But how can he change her father's mind? Raj befriends the soon-to-be groom and pretends to be a friend of the family. He helps with the wedding preparations and soon gains everyone's friendship. Even Simran's father is won over. However everything comes crashing down when Raj's true identity is revealed. It seems that all is lost. Then, as Raj is preparing to leave, the father realizes that Raj truly and sincerely loves Simran, and that this is the best guarantee of her happiness. He allows Simran to leave with Raj, and all ends happily.
