The film is about two sisters, Nimmi and Shalu (Chaudhry and Zinta) and their individual relationship with their mother, Saritaji (Rekha). However Shalu is the daughter of Rekha's husband and his affair with another woman. Her parentage causes Rekha to pay more affection to her own daughter, and ignores Shalu.

Eventually Dev Khanna (Arjun Rampal) comes into both their lives. Circumstances make Nimmi believe that Dev is in love with her. Her mother offers a marriage proposal to Dev's father (Nath) but secretly Dev and Shalu are in love. Saritaji sees Shalu flirting with Dev and decides to give her a choice and also tells her about her parentage. Heartbroken Shalu agrees to forget about Dev and obey her mother. Dev and his father do not know about her parentage, so who will Dev marry? Nimmi finds out Shalu loves Dev. So , she tells Shalu she can't be happy when Shalu is unhappy. So , she lets Shalu marry Dev.
