[edit] Image tagging for Image:Plankton2.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Plankton2.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

[edit] License tagging for Image:Compasses.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Compasses.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 00:06, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

I just corrected that. Thanks. Dhaifley 02:58, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] O'neill Sea Odyssey

Hi. I'm a bit concerned that the text and images in O'neill sea odyssey look to be someone else's copyright. Can you tell me where the text came from please? You are aware that you cannot just copy other people's text into wikipedia? --Tagishsimon (talk)

Further, the http://www.oneillseaodyssey.org/ pahges have a copyright notice on them: © Copyright O'Neill Sea Odyssey, 2002-2005, All Rights Reserved.
This being the case, how on earth can you make public domain claims for the images you've taken from the site and uploaded onto this site? --Tagishsimon (talk)
Although, obviously, if you're Dan Haifley, Executive Director of a certain odyssey then...can I check one thing. Image:KidsCompass NB.jpg has the photographers name on it. Are you in a position to put this image into the puiblic domain? --Tagishsimon (talk)

Hi. I am the one who created Copyright O'Neill Sea Odyssey, I am the Executive Director of O'Neill Sea Odyssey. The content of our page came from my non-website, MS Word template which is used in proposals we send to many prospective supporters, and they in turn use those proposals on their own websites, newsletters and annual reports.

Nikki Brooks worked for OSO and she has given us permission to use the image.

Question: I need to edit the title and cannot figure out how to do that, do you know? Thanks! Dhaifley 02:50, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Oops - scratch the last question, someone has fixed it. Thanks. Dhaifley 02:57, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Compasses.jpg listed for deletion

An image or media file that you uploaded or altered, Image:Compasses.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion. Please look there to see why this is (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you. [edit] Re Image:Compasses.jpg and O'Neill Sea Odyssey

I have replied to your comments on my talk page, and also copied it here.

To address this, first, I have never edited the O'Neill Sea Odyssey page, have a look at the history. The image I tagged, Image:Compasses.jpg is an orphan; not used. As for claiming it is an advertisement, quite frankly by reviewing the article, I do believe it likely fails WP:SPAM and you as the driving force behind the organization and writing the article, you are in breach of the project's conflict of interest guidelines. Also, no reliable sources are referenced in the article. All three of the above qualify the article for deletion review - but I am not going to go there at this time. Finally about the image's ownership, when you uploaded it, you indicated it was public domain, see [1]. By indcating that licence, you are negating any copyright claim to the image. Now, I doubt you have the ability to release the copyright, so its use here on wikipedia is under a fair use license; an orphaned fair use image is deletable in 48 hours. I am going to also copy this response to the user's talk page.--User:Gay Cdn (talk) (Contr) 12:32, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

The remarks posted above are very sad. Dhaifley 15:25, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Plankton image

Photomontage of plankton organisms
Photomontage of plankton organisms

Hi there. I think you recently uploaded an image of some people sampling plankton. Anyway, for some reason your image overwrote the image to the right (same filename?). As this latter image was used in several places through WP, I've "reverted" your image back to the original one. If you want to use your image, I suggest uploading it again, perhaps with a different filename. Sorry about this. Cheers, --Plumbago 20:01, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

THANK YOU! Dhaifley 20:03, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Proposed deletion of O'Neill Sea Odyssey

I removed the deletion template and summarised the reason why: the article is not advertising because it does not sell anything. There are similar articles throughout Wikipedia that discuss non-profit organizations that are not tagged for deletion. The article contents are factual. I would direct interested individuals to a simple Google search, or to the websites of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, Applied Survey Research, or multiple school districts. Thank you for your concern. Dhaifley 05:47, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] More O'Neill Sea Odyssey!

I have made massive changes to the article O'Neill Sea Odyssey in response to the deletion debate.

If you want to re-insert the massive amounts of information I removed, it is vital that you can provide references to the information, particularly inline citations, and preferably from sources not directly affiliated with the program. Using primary sources, such as the projects official web site, is generally not a great idea and relying on them exclusively will almost certainly result in another deletion debate.

If you require any assistance with this article feel free to contact me and I will be happy to assist where I can.

That looks more like an encyclopedia. Thanks. Dhaifley 14:16, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Citations

Have a look at Wikipedia:Footnotes and Wikipedia:Citation templates. This will give you the basic idea of the method I use to cite sources. This is not the only way of doing, of course!

Once I get home from work (7 hours away, yet!) I will do up an example for you using the source you gave me. In the meantime, I hope this helps.

-- Qarnos 00:13, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Thank you Qarnos for setting up the example. Dhaifley 00:31, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Referencing example

Ok... here goes.

The method a lot of wikipedia articles use is to place a <ref> tag after the statement you want to reference. Example:

This is a referenced statement<ref>citation goes here</ref>

<ref> is used to mark the start of the citation and </ref> (note the slash) marks the end. If you want to use the same citation in several different places you can save time an effort by firstly giving the reference a name:

<ref name="Cite1">citation goes here</ref>

You can then use that reference again by using a so-called "empty" reference tag:

<ref name="Cite1" />

Notice that the "empty" ref tag has does not have a closing </ref> tag, but instead has a slash at the end of it.

There is no Wikipedia standard for the format of the citation enclosed by the tags, but there are some templates you can use to make it easier. The template descriptions can be found here. The advantage of using templates is that they produce a somewhat standardized format which will be the same in all articles which use them - so it gives a bit of consistency. Using the example source you gave me, I would use the the Cite conference template, which is used to cite conference papers. If you click that link it will give you a list of the parameters the template can take. Most of them are optional, but try to fill in as many as you can. Citation templates generally use the same parameters, which also makes life easier.

The way we use the template is to type:

{{template name | parameter = value | parameter = value}}

So for your citation I would first start with the basics:

{{cite conference | url = http://resources.ca.gov/ocean/cwo06/PDF/abstracts.pdf | date = 2006-09-17 | accessdate = 2007-02-14 | format = PDF | booktitle = California and the World Ocean 2006 | title = Book of Abstracts | pages = 67}}

Just notice that the dates, for this purpose, are formatted YYYY-MM-DD. You should also add author information if you can find it (a quick look at the reference didn't reveal anything), but it's not crucial for this reference.

So, putting it all together (I'll use the name "cwo06" for this one):

<ref name = "cwo06">{{cite conference | url = http://resources.ca.gov/ocean/cwo06/PDF/abstracts.pdf | date = 2006-09-17 | accessdate = 2007-02-14 | format = PDF | booktitle = California and the World Ocean 2006 | title = Book of Abstracts | pages = 67}}</ref>

An article using this method should have the tag <references /> in the references section - this is where the footnotes will be generated (The O'Neill article already has it). The above example will look something like this:

1. (2006-09-17) "Book of Abstracts" (PDF). California and the World Ocean 2006: 67. Retrieved on 2007-02-14.

I hope this is of some help.

THANK YOU!!!! I am new and this really helps. I appreciate the time you took. Dhaifley 14:25, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Correction

I just realized I malformed the link to the citation template descriptions. The proper link is Wikipedia:Citation templates (I also corrected the error in my previous post to this page). I hope this didn't cause you any trouble.

If you have any more problems with referencing, feel free to ask me. Since I am a bit of a stickler for references, I don't mind helping out and answering questions about them, so don't feel embarrassed to ask! -- Qarnos 10:24, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Addition: I just checked your contributions and noticed you needed help with citations for Fred Keeley. I'm more than happy to help. I will also add that it is great to see someone talking the effort to cite their sources. A lot of people don't and it is a real problem on Wikipedia. Good work! -- Qarnos 10:28, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Well, you got me going on it, so you are the role model for it. Thanks. Dhaifley 16:20, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
