DeWitt is a city in Clinton County, Iowa, United States. The population was 5,049 at the 2000 census.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.6 km² (4.9 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 5,049 people, 2,071 households, and 1,362 families residing in the city. The population density was 400.3/km² (1,036.8/mi²). There were 2,158 housing units at an average density of 171.1/km² (443.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.12% White, 0.22% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.63% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 0.65% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.97% of the population.

There were 2,071 households out of which 33.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.5% were married couples living together, 10.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 30.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 3.01.

In the city the population was spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 19.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 90.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $44,720, and the median income for a family was $54,063. Males had a median income of $37,951 versus $25,457 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,717. About 2.8% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.1% of those under age 18 and 10.1% of those age 65 or over.
