In the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game, the devourer is a horrible undead creature which lurks on the Ethereal Plane and Astral Plane. It resembles a grey, horrible mutated, malnourished, sickly, shambling humanoid. The barely-there skin on its chest is opened up, revealing the completely dry and empty ribcage. Growing out of this ribcage is a smaller head, and two arms.

The devourer has no desire except the sadistic lust to consume a person's life essence. It starts off by first weakening them by slashing with its claws, then draining their energy, and then finally grasping their head with the two arms in its chest and suck out their life essence. This weakens them, both mentally and physically, until they either die, or the devourer lets go. A devourer which has recently consumed life essence becomes immune to all manner of spells. The devourer can also cast many types of spells itself, and control other Undead to a limited extent.

Devourers speak Common.

They are neutral evil in alignment.
