Device was formed by musician/songwriter Holly Knight. Knight appeared on three albums with the band Spider during the earlier portion of the decade and was a songwriter. She wrote songs in the 1980's for Pat Benatar, Scandal, Heart, and Tina Turner and many others. Device's lead vocalist was Paul Engemann and their guitarist was Gene Black, who also worked with Cher and Tina Turner. Mike Chapman was the producer for Device. Their only album, entitled 22B3, was released in the spring of 1986. It produced a Top 40 single with "Hanging on a Heart Attack," which peaked on the charts at #35.

After Device disbanded, Knight continued writing songs for other perfomers. She also released two solo albums during the late '80s. Engemann joined Animotion and took the place of their lead singer Bill Wadhams (with actress Cynthia Rhoades replacing original female lead Astrid Plane) and appeared on Animaotion's 1989 Top Ten "Room to Move." Gene Black continued to be involved in session work.
