Deutsche Höhere Privatschule Windhoek

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Deutsche Höhere Privatschule, or DHPS as it is commonly known, is the most prominent private school in Namibia. Situated in the capital Windhoek, it is the oldest private high school in the country. It is also one of the biggest German international schools in Africa. With its high academic standard the DHPS has established a reputation for scholars achieving top marks in their final exams.

The DHPS is a boarding school, but has many day scholars. The hostel offers a comfortable home away from home with various sporting facilities e.g. swimming pool, basketball courts, soccer fields or a roller hockey rink. The school flies both the German and Namibian flag at its main entrance. DHPS covers grades Kindergarten to grade 13. Scholars have the option of leaving with the HIGCSE (offered by Cambridge University) in grade 12, which exempts them for South African universities and other Southern African institutions, or doing the German A-levels 'Abitur' (13th year required for German university entrance).

The current Headmaster is Dr. S. Frey.

[edit] History

The school was established in 1909 under the name Kaiserliche Realschule (Imperial High School). It changed its name to Deutsche Höhere Privatschule(German Higher Private School) upon the abdication of the German emperor Wilhelm II. DHPS is continually subsidised by the Federal German Government today as well as by relatively expensive schoolfees.
