Deusto
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Deusto or Deustu is a neighbourhood of the city of Bilbao, Basque Country placed in the right bank of the Estuary of Bilbao with a population of 50,000. It used to be a separate municipality until it was incorporated in 1925. The traditional center has always been at the Church of St. Peter. Modernly it hosts one of the most important Jesuit Universities: the University of Deusto. Along its shore it was excavated the incomplete Canal of Deustu, which was part of the plans for canalization of the firth, yet it was abanadoned when it became obvious that bringing cargo ships into the very heart of the city was impractical. Since then the neighbourhood Zorrozaurre became a separate, artificially created peninsula. The neighbourhood is linked to downtown Bilbao by a bascule bridge.
