Actually, detainee is a much broader term used for those held in state custody with an indeterminate or changing status. For instance those held without bond pending trial (either because they do not make bond or it is denied them) are presumed innocent until convinced and sentenced, which can take months or even years, yet they are must remain in jail, often referred to as "detainees," not "prisoners" and certainly not "convicts." Unfortunately, the condition of pre-trial detainees in local jails is often much worse than that of prisoners serving time in penitentiaries. NTK 03:27, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re-direct?

The term "detain" re-directs here. There is a request to assess an article on the term "detain", in the law-enforcement and constitutional sense, on the Law Enforcement WikiProject. It seems to me that it should not be re-directed but I don't know how to undo itEMT1871 17:53, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
