[edit] History

Dr. William R. Rice came to the First Baptist Church of Melvindale in February 1949 as their pastor. In July 1950, groundbreaking for a new auditorium in neighboring Allen Park began the construction of the congregation’s new church, and with the different locale came a different name: the Inter-City Baptist Church.

Over the next eight years, tremendous growth forced the construction of a larger church building. On March 15, 1964, the new building was dedicated, followed by yet more construction. By 1974, a high school, elementary school, retirement facility, and a bookstore / library were among the facilities that housed the ministries of the church.

In 1974, Dr. Rice called a meeting to ascertain the feasibility of a fundamental, independent Baptist theological seminary in the Detroit area. After two years of careful consideration, the church and its advisors opened the Detroit Baptist Divinity School in the fall of 1976 on the original Allen Park church property, located just across the street from the current church location. From the start, the seminary was to focus on expository preaching combined with a practical local church ministry, with Baptist beliefs woven throughout.
