Destination restaurant
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A destination restaurant is a restaurant with a chef or cuisine famous enough to be the reason patrons travel to a locale to experience the restaurant. In Europe, such a restaurant might be a Michelin Guide 3-star restaurant, which according to the guide is "worthy of a journey." There are typically 20–25 such restaurants in a country such as France.
In the United States, destination restaurants are typically among the country's best. They are often located outside of major metropolitan centers and rely on their renown to draw patrons. Destination restaurants often serve multi-course, prix fixe menus. Because of the complexity of the food and the large staffs, prices can be high.
The 2006 book, "National Geographic Passport to the Best--The 10 Best of Everything: an Ultimate Guide for Traverles," lists their choice of the world's ten best destination restaurants:
- The Herbfarm, Woodinville, Washington USA
- The French Laundry, Yountville, California USA
- Chez Panisse, Berkeley, California USA
- El Bulli, Girona, Spain
- The Inn at Little Washington, Washington, Virginia USA
