Despair, The torn heart (Japanese: 絶望　引き裂かれた心, - Zetsubō Hikisakareta hāto) is episode 172 of the anime series Naruto.

Anko manages to save the team by summoning a giant snake. The snake takes the team in its' mouth, then crashes through the wall and lets them out. They realize that the convoy will set off soon, and hasten to catch up with it.

Amachi and his team have already started their attack when Team Anko catches up to them. Naruto takes on Isaribi, while Anko confronts Amachi. Isaribi drags Naruto underwater, but he manages to escape onto a small reef that just barely pokes above the surface. He tries to reason with her, but she attacks him again. Still, Naruto doesn't give up, and manages to reach her on an emotional level.

Anko's fight with Amachi seems to be at a stalemate, even though Amachi is distracted by Isaribi's lack of aggression. He manages to get away by throwing a jar filled with sleeping gas (probably ether) at Anko. Amachi goes over to where Naruto and Isaribi are talking, and tells her to finish off Naruto. When Naruto goes off on one of his famous rants, Amachi sneers at him and transforms into a Kaima. He claims that he is a finished product, not an incomplete prototype like Isaribi. Amachi also says that he only let Isaribi live out of pity, and that she is now worthless.

Enraged by Amachi's cruelty, Naruto attacks him, but is rebuffed time and again. Amachi summons the Umibozu ("Sea Boss"), which absorbs Naruto into its' body and begins to drown him. Amachi tells Isaribi that he is the only one who can make her human again, so she had better obey him. Naruto pleads with her not to listen to Amachi, and summons the chakra of the Nine-Tailed Fox.

Naruto uses the Fox's chakra to literally boil the Sea Boss away from him, and tells Amachi that he will not let Isaribi go. Amachi and Isaribi are stunned by the incredible power Naruto is generating, and Anko gives Isaribi a quick update on the Nine-Tailed Fox. Naruto gathers himself for the attack. The episode ends.

[edit] Trivia

• The Third Hokage declared the real fate of the Nine-Tailed Fox to be classfied information. However, since he's dead (and Naruto is using the Fox's chakra on a regular basis, and nobody's watching or listening), this does not seem to apply anymore.
