"Desert Song" is the eleventh track from My Chemical Romance's live album, Life on the Murder Scene.

The song was released for the first time on My Chemical Romance's Life on the Murder Scene DVD which was released on 21 March 2006. The song is also played in the main menu of the DVD. There is also a Def Leppard song titled "Desert Song" on their Retro Active album. This song may also have something to do with the My Chemical Romance song "Demolition Lovers", because in "Demolition Lovers", Gerard sings about a couple escaping into the desert, only to be eventually shot and killed. The song might be the man remembering the events of what happened when he was killed. In the Life on the Murder Scene DVD, while filming "The Ghost Of You" video clip, one of the band members says "next time somewhere dry, like a desert or something" possibly talking of the origin of the song.

[edit] Music

Musically, this song is not very similar to the majority of My Chemical Romance songs thus far. My Chemical Romance music is generally more heavy, although acoustic guitars have been used on one song from each of the previous two albums. This song features Gerard Way singing vocals in a style that has been both lauded for its unique expression and criticised for its rough timbre and use of unconventional ornaments and tone bending. The lone acoustic guitar played by Ray Toro is accompanied by motifs and ornaments from a clean electric guitar played by Frank Iero. The song has a steadily climaxing verse and chorus, followed by a bridge and a repeat of the chorus.

"Desert Song" is strongly reminiscent of Radiohead's "Pyramid Song" both in name and musically. Gerard Way has often said that he is a fan of British music and Radiohead, so it can be noted that they were possibly an influence in the making of this song. The clear and haunting use of repetitive chords give off the feeling of loneliness and introspectiveness, underlying themes in the majority of the band's songs. Frontman, Gerard Way's vocals are also atypical of My Chemical Romance's songs, producing a much harsher and raw sound.
