Desamparados Canton

Desamparados Canton is the third canton of San José Province, and one of the most populated cantons in Costa Rica. Desamparados Canton is attached to San José. Its capital is Desamparados city. Desamparados canton limits with San José, Alajuelita, Santa Ana, and in some slight sections with Acosta, Mora and Belén.

The canton of Desamparados had 193,478 inhabitants in 2000, in 118.3 km² (there is 1636 inhab. per km²)

Founded in 1848, it was one of the first cantons in Costa Rica. Its ordinary municipal budget for 2003 was of ¢ 1,305.2 millions.

80.4% of its population lives in urban areas. 19.8% of its inhabitants are under 10 years old, and 5.1% over 65.
