Desai

Desai is an Indo-Aryan administrative title derived from the word "Dah Sai" which means ten parts. Desai's were revenue collectors who looked after a region or area on the Ruler's behalf and in return would get ten percent share of revenue. Historically, the Rulers of Gujarat (Western India) were honoured with the title 'Desai'. Desais can now be found all over the Indian Subcontinent and can belong to various castes and communities. The name 'Dizaei' is also commonly found in Iran and Afghanistan . Some of the Notable Desais are :
- Morarji Desai - The late Prime Minister of India.
- Balasaheb Desai - The late Home Minister and Revenue Minister of Maharashtra.
- C. D. Desai - Chunnilal Devkaran Nanjee: "Desai" - Indian philatelist.
- Kiran Desai - The renowned Indian author, who was awarded the Man Booker Prize, 2006.
- Anita Desai- Also a renowed author, mother of Kiran Desai mentioned above
- Mahadev Desai - The secretary and assistant of Mahatma Gandhi.
- Manmohan Desai - The late film director who gave numerous entertaining Bollywood flicks
- Mohammed AK Desai - The renowned economist.
- Rishi Desai - Writer/Director
- Superintendent Ali Dizaei - Highest ranking Asian in the British Police Force
- Pasha Bahadur Disai - Leader of the Hamesha tribe of Afghanistan 711-769
