This article is about the historical ship. For the fictional ship seen in the Gundam Seed universe, see Des Moines class cruiser (Gundam).
The Des Moines class cruiser was a class of United States Navy heavy cruiser. They were the last of the US Navy’s all -gun heavy cruisers. They were derived from the Baltimore-class heavy cruisers, but were larger and carried a new design of rapid-fire semiautomatic 8" gun. Three ships of the class were completed: Des Moines (CA-134), Salem (CA-139), and Newport News (CA-148). Salem is a museum ship in Quincy, Massachusetts. Newport News was scrapped in 1993, and Des Moines is being scrapped in 2007.
